Along with Jessica Shumway and Jody Clarke-Midura (Utah State University), I am investigating the spatial thinking underlying early mathematical (MT) and computational thinking (CT) in a 4 year NSF funded DRK12 project. We have begun piloting coding activities in first and second grade math classrooms to explore the integration of math and coding curriculum. We are co-designing curriculum activities and materials with classroom teachers in an English-Portuguese-Spanish immersion program. In addition, we are developing formative assessments of early elementary CT that teachers can use in conjunction with curriculum activities. And we will eventually produce K-2 learning trajectories for CT based on our integrated CT-MT curriculum and assessments.
